Interpretive Reasoning
Can this person engage with a layered text — scripture, literature, philosophical tradition — and arrive at a disciplined interpretation as a living participant, rather than passively receiving inherited readings?
The ability to engage with a layered text, tradition, or body of meaning — to hold ambiguity, follow threads of significance across contexts, and arrive at a disciplined interpretation one can articulate and defend. This is precisely Iqbal's call for ijtihad.
The Diagnostic Question
“Can this person engage with a layered text — scripture, literature, philosophical tradition — and arrive at a disciplined interpretation as a living participant, rather than passively receiving inherited readings?”
Why This Matters
The Pakistani Context
The Quran demands interpretation. The difference between receiving someone else's interpretation and engaging through one's own disciplined reading is the most consequential intellectual distinction in Pakistani life. This is precisely what Iqbal meant by ijtihad — not the abandonment of tradition, but the activation of one's own reasoning within it. A people who cannot interpret their own foundational texts are a people who have outsourced their deepest convictions.
These capacities are not abstract ideals. They are the concrete description of what it means for a people to think for themselves.
